Woman Behind the Camera, Woman on Screen: Gender Representation in Contemporary Croatian Cinema

Sažetak
Rad analizira reprezentaciju ženskih likova u suvremenoj hrvatskoj kinematografiji, s fokusom na filmove koje su režirale žene u razdoblju od 1991. do 2023. godine. Polazeći od uvida feminističke filmske teorije i recentnih istraživanja o rodnoj reprezentaciji, provedena je kvalitativna i kvantitativna analiza 23 igrana filma hrvatskih redateljica. Istraživanje obuhvaća prikaz rodnih uloga, profesionalne i emocionalne autonomije ženskih likova, njihova odnosa prema patrijarhalnim strukturama, učestalost stereotipnih obrazaca te rezultate Bechdel testa. Rezultati pokazuju da su žene u filmovima sve češće prikazane kao kompleksne i aktivne protagonistkinje, oslobođene tradicionalnih uloga supruge i majke. Međutim, još su uvijek prisutni obrasci rodne stereotipizacije, osobito u prikazu zanimanja, emocionalnog izražavanja i izostanku žena starije životne dobi. Iako rijetki, primjeri izravnog otpora patrijarhatu i prikazi ženskih savezništava otvaraju prostor za daljnju dekonstrukciju dominantnih narativa. Filmovi redateljica značajno doprinose razvoju rodno osviještene filmske kulture i upućuju na potrebu za sustavnijom institucionalnom podrškom ženama u filmskoj industriji. Kroz vlastite autorske poetike, hrvatske redateljice ne samo da oblikuju nove narativne strategije, već i redefiniraju žensku prisutnost u domaćoj kinematografiji.

Abstract
This paper analyzes the representation of female characters in contemporary Croatian cinema, focusing on films directed by women between 1991 and 2024. Drawing on feminist film theory and recent research on gender representation, the study employs both qualitative and quantitative content analysis of 23 feature films. It examines the portrayal of gender roles, the professional and emotional autonomy of female characters, their relationship to patriarchal structures, the presence of stereotypical patterns, and the results of the Bechdel test. Findings indicate that women are increasingly depicted as complex and active protagonists, no longer confined to traditional roles of wife and mother. However, certain patterns of gender stereotyping persist—particularly in the depiction of occupations, emotional expressiveness, and the absence of older women. Although still rare, examples of direct resistance to patriarchy and portrayals of female solidarity suggest a growing potential for deconstructing dominant narratives. The work of Croatian women directors significantly contributes to the development of a gender-sensitive film culture and points to the need for greater institutional support for women in the film industry. Through distinct authorial approaches, these directors not only create new narrative strategies but also redefine female presence in national cinema.
