The Cartographic Contribution of Augustin Lubin to the Knowledge of the Geography and Culture of Central and Southern Dalmatia in the Seventeenth Century
Cilj je ovoga rada kroz kvalitativnu komparativnu analizu karte dijela središnje i južne Dalmacije augustinca Augustina Lubina i drugih suvremenih karata i narativnih izvora propitati doprinos Lubinove karte geografsko-kartografskom poznavanju južnodalmatinske obale i otoka te vjerodostojnosti u bilježenju kontura obalne linije, orografije, hidrografije i toponima, ali i dokumentiranju kulturnih sadržaja poput specifičnog vjerskog inventara karte (smještaj i toponimija augustinskih samostana, migracije vjernika i sl.) u 17. stoljeću.
Abstract
During the early modern period, the eastern Adriatic coast and islands stood at the intersection of military-political, social, economic, cultural, and other influences and interests, as well as diverse forms of communication. The Venetian-Ottoman military conflicts and the resulting devastation led to increased administrative demands from both military and civil entities, which created a greater need for spatial knowledge. In response to this demand, both local and foreign experts played a crucial role in enhancing the understanding of the eastern Adriatic, notably through the creation of maps featuring relatively accurate representations of geographical space. The aim of this paper is to examine, through a qualitative comparative analysis of the map by the Augustinian Augustin Lubin and other contemporary maps and narrative sources, the contribution of Lubin’s map to the geographic and cartographic understanding of the central and southern Dalmatian coast and islands. This analysis will concentrate on the map's accuracy in depicting the contours of the coastline, the orography, hydrography, and toponyms. Additionally, it will examine the cultural elements represented in the map, such as the locations and names of Augustinian monasteries and the migration patterns of the faithful during the 17th century. Although Lubin's map lacked the accuracy and reliability of the physical (geographic) features when compared to those of his contemporaries, he made a significant visionary contribution by representing socio-geographical elements, particularly the culturally and religiously shaped spatial features of the Adriatic region. By doing this, he not only enhanced the understanding of the Adriatic but also, well ahead of his time, actively contributed to and fostered the development of thematic cartography as a distinct and specialized branch of the field.
